글렌알라키 12년.

위스키 인생 첫 글렌알라키는 바로 이 12년 이였다.

예전에 글렌알라키가 빌리워커옹 손으로 넘어간 후 알음알음으로 한국에 들어오기 시작할때쯤 우연히 시음할 기회가 생겼

었는데,

그때 딱 한모금 마셔보고 바로 보틀로 구매했다.
15년을.???

(12년 마셔놓고 15년 사서 사장님 당황했을듯...그니까 애초에 15년도 시음하게 해주셨어야죱!!)

시음 당시 거의 마른오징어 즙짜듯이 남아있는거 탈탈 털어서 내어주셔서 에어레이션은 될대로 되버린 상태에 양도 한모

금 정도라 크게 파악하긴 힘들었지만,

그럼에도 불구하고 12년의 어린 친구 치고는 셰리의 향이 아주 좋게 다가왔었다.

이정도 느낌에 빌리워커의 네임벨류까지 더해본다면 분명 15년은 더 맛있으리라.

해서 주저없이 15년을 한병 들였었고 그렇게 그 후로도 글렌알라키 15년은 지금도 끊기지 않게 채워 넣는 중이다.

(비슷한 숙성년수와 가격대에서 글렌알라키 15년은 정말...맛도리인듯?)

그래서 오히려 12년보다 15년을 보틀로 먼저 접했었고, 그 후에 12년도 다시 제대로 경험해보고자 보틀로 들였었다.

분명 실망 시키지 않을것 같아서...

그때의 느낌이 좋아서...

구입당시에는 여타 다른 증류소의 엔트리급 위스키보다 비싸거나 하지 않았기 때문에, 가격적으로도 크게 나쁠건 없었다.

(근데 요즘은 왜인지는 모르겠는데 다른 증류소의 엔트리급 위스키보다 애매하게 만원,만오천원정도는 비싼느낌..........?

왜죠...?)

한잔 따라 놓으면,

우선 12년 숙성 치고는 색감도 어둑어둑하니 마음에 든다.

그리고 어린 친구 치고는 향이 꽤나 좋은 편이다.

초반에 알콜부즈가 살짝 치고 들어오지만, 이부분은 에어레이션 마법의 힘을 빌리면 금세 얌전해진다.

전체적으로 화사하면서도 녹진한 서로 다른듯한 그 셰리의 느낌을 잘 표현해주고 있고,

졸인과일의 느낌, 달달하면서도 커피에서 느껴지는 고소한 느낌도 가지고 있다.

알라키 특유의 다크초콜릿 갬성도 옅게나마 잘 간직 하고 있음.

향만 맡아보면 이미 이건 맛있는 위스키.

근데 이게 맛이 15년을 먼저 실컷 즐기고 난 다음이라 어쩔수 없이 15년과 비교를 하게 되는 부분이긴 하지만,

(아니...당연히 숙성년수도 다르고! 가격도 다른데! 뭐! 어쩌라고! 너 비읍시옷이야!?)

향만큼 맛이 쫓아오질 못한다.

많이 뭔가 빠져있고 비어있다.

뭐좀 해볼라고 하다가 에잉몰라 하는 느낌.

다른 엔트리급 제품들과 비교하자면 또 크게 나무랄데 없긴 한데,
워낙 향에서부터 갖게되는 기대감 때문인지 실망감도 크게 찾아오는 느낌.

그뒤로 따라오는 피니쉬에서는 알라키표 초콜렛 느낌이 사알짝 나면서 역시 나쁘지 않게 마무리된다.

어떻게 보면 전체적으로 잘만들어진 위스키이고 모난곳 없는데,

괜히 뭔가 실망하게 된다.

이게 다 잘난 형 때문이다.

12년 부터 마셨으면 절대 이런 생각 안했을텐데 이게 다 3살 많은 그 형 때문이다.

분명 싱글몰트를 처음 접하는 사람에겐 글렌드로낙 12년 만큼 강추할만한 위스키이고,

빌리워커 어르신의 철학이 녹아들어,

엔트리급 12년 제품임에도 46%로 출시되어 마냥 가볍게 느껴지지도 않고,

내츄랄 칼라 임에도 색이 상당히 진하고, 향에서도 굉장히 만족감을 주고,

맛도 대량생산용 엔트리급 12년 숙성 치고는 나쁘지 않고,

분명 다 좋은데 찜찜한 기분을 주는 이유는 아무래도 이 두가지 때문인것 같다.

잘난형과 만오천원.

잘난형을 먼저 만나지 않았더라면.....

가격이 지금보다 만오천원 정도만 쌌더라면....

(아니면 만원이라도...)

그래도요 있자나요 빌리옹....

나 가끔 알라키 15년 사먹기 부담스러울때마다 대신 12년 한병씩 사마시고 있어요.

찜찜하지만 맛있으니까여....

그니까 좋은 위스키 많이많이 오래오래 만들어주세요.

자꾸 그놈에 이상한 우드 피니쉬 장난질은 좀 그만하시구여....

Glenallachie 12years

GlenAllachie 12 Year Old.

The very first GlenAllachie of my whisky life was this 12.

Back when GlenAllachie had passed into Billy Walker's hands and was starting to trickle into Korea by word of mouth, I happened to get a chance to taste it,

and after just one sip I immediately bought a bottle.
Of the 15.???

(I tasted the 12 and bought the 15, so the owner must've been confused... then you should've let me taste the 15 in the first place!!)

At that tasting, they wrung out what was left in the bottle like squeezing juice out of a dried squid, so it was already way over-aerated, and it was only about a sip, so it was hard to get a real read on it,

but even so, for a young 12-year-old the sherry aroma came across really nicely.

With a feel like that, plus Billy Walker's name value, the 15 was bound to be even tastier.

So I brought home a bottle of the 15 without hesitation, and ever since, I've kept GlenAllachie 15 constantly restocked to this day.

(At similar ages and price points, GlenAllachie 15 is really... a tasty one, right?)

So I actually met the 15 as a bottle before the 12, and after that I brought home a bottle of the 12 too, to properly experience it again.

Because I was sure it wouldn't let me down...

Because my impression back then was so good...

When I bought it, it wasn't pricier than other distilleries' entry-level whiskies, so price-wise there was nothing much wrong with it either.

(But these days, for whatever reason, it feels like it's awkwardly 10,000 to 15,000 won more expensive than other distilleries' entry-level whiskies..........?

Why...?)

Pour a glass,

and first, for a 12-year-old the color is nice and dark, which I like.

And for a young one, the aroma is pretty good.

Early on there's a slight hit of alcohol booze, but borrow a little aeration magic and it calms down in no time.

Overall it nicely expresses that sherry character that's both bright and rich, two things that seem different from each other,

and it has a stewed-fruit feel, plus something sweet yet nutty and roasty, like you get from coffee.

It also holds on to Allachie's signature dark-chocolate vibe, if faintly.

Just smelling it, it's already a tasty whisky.

But the palate... granted, since I'd already had my fill of the 15 first, I can't help comparing it to the 15,

(I mean... of course the age is different! And the price is different! So what! What do you want from me! Are you an I-D-I-O-T!?)

the palate can't keep up with the nose.

A lot seems to be missing, it feels empty.

Like it tried to do something and then went, eh, whatever.

Compared to other entry-level products there's nothing much to fault,
but maybe because of the expectations the nose builds up, the disappointment hits hard too.

The finish that follows has a faint touch of Allachie-brand chocolate and, again, wraps up not badly at all.

In a way it's a well-made whisky overall with no rough edges,

and yet somehow I end up disappointed.

It's all because of the overachieving big brother.

If I'd started with the 12 I'd never have thought this way. It's all because of that brother who's 3 years older.

For someone new to single malt, it's definitely a whisky I'd recommend as strongly as GlenDronach 12,

with Billy Walker's philosophy baked in,

it's released at 46% even though it's an entry-level 12-year-old, so it never feels flimsy,

it's natural color and yet the color is quite deep, the aroma is really satisfying,

and the taste isn't bad for a mass-produced entry-level 12-year-old,

it's definitely all good, but the reason it leaves me feeling a bit uneasy seems to come down to these two things.

The overachieving big brother, and 15,000 won.

If only I hadn't met the overachieving big brother first.....

If only it were about 15,000 won cheaper than now....

(or even just 10,000...)

But ya know what, Sir Billy....

Whenever buying Allachie 15 feels like too much, I buy a bottle of the 12 instead.

It leaves me uneasy, but it's tasty....

So please keep making lots and lots of good whisky for a long, long time.

And please quit it with those darn weird wood finish shenanigans already....
