그동안 경험했던 모든 캠밸타운 출신 위스키들과 특히 같은 글렌가일 증류소 출신의 킬커란 8년 CS 배치5, 킬커란 12년

에 아주 만족했던 경험이 있었음에도 불구하고 사알짝 고민하다 결국 들이게 된,

2022년6월21일병입 (70%버번캐스크,30%셰리캐스크)

주변에서 쉽게 찾기 힘든 접근성과 살짝 섭섭한 수준의 가격,

셰리성애자가 만족하기엔 약간 부족해 보이는 셰리 비율,

(색으로 봐도 알 수 있지만, 버번캐스크 비율이 높은편.)

때문에 살짝 고민했지만,

그 동안 그 동네에(캠밸타운) 대해 쌓여있는 믿음과, 킬커란의 현재 맏형인 부분,

그리고 2022년 병입된 킬커란16년이 맛이 좋다는 평들이 있어서,

흔들리는 마음을 붙잡고 아몰랑 가즈아ㅏㅏㅏㅏㅏㅏㅏㅏㅏㅏㅏㅏㅏ

외치고 정신체리고 보니 내손에 있었다.

그리고 이제는 익숙해져버린 부분이긴하나,

굳이 국내 리쿼샵 가격이랑 큰 차이 없는 가격으로 해외 직구로 아주 호구롭게 구매했다히히....

(물론 판매하고 있는 국내 리쿼샵도 거의 없긴함. 접근성이 아주 똥이다.)

캠밸타운의 개쩌는 중고신입 같은 느낌의 킬커란은 2020년에 이 16년 제품이 첫 등판 했는데,

찾아보면 2020년,2021,2022년의 블렌딩한 캐스크 비율이 다 다르다.

(정규라인업이니 나오긴할테지만 2023년은 아직 병입을 안한듯싶다. 블렌딩 비율 또 틀려지는거 아닌가 모르겄다.)

2020년 96%버번, 4%마르살라

2021년 75%버번, 25%셰리

2022년 70%버번, 30%셰리

대충 머 이런식인데다가,

매년 병입도 한해 한번만 한 수준이고, 수량도 많지 않은편이라 구하기도 쉽지 않아서인지 정보가 많이 없다.

응?정보가 많이 없으면 머다? 내가 사서 먹어보면 되지롱!!!!!!????

우선, 잔에 담아 놓으면

아무래도 버번캐스크 비율이 높아서인지 색은 노란 빛깔을 띈다.

발베니12년 싱글베럴 보다 아주 약간 짙은 색감 정도.

(아마 여자분들은 이거보다 더 디테일하게 색 표현이 가능할거 같은데 내가 할수 있는 한계는 이 만큼이 전부인듯..)

향은 기분좋게 향긋하고 오렌지필을 쥐고 난 후 손가락에서 느껴지는 만큼의 시트러스가 느껴진다.

46%에 뚜따여도 막 치고들어오는 알콜부즈같은것도 없다.

(16년의 힘인가...)

그리고 캠밸타운 출신 아이들 답게 역시나 향에서도 피트감은 거의 느껴지지 않는다.

향의 끝 쪽에서 버번캐스크 캐릭터의 바닐라스러운 달달함도 살짝들어옴.

맛은 향에서 느꼈던 결 그대로 약간의 시트러스함을 유지한다.
아 그리고 개인적으로 킬커란 16년은 뚜따 후 바로 마시는것보단 잔에 따라놓고 최소 10분 혹은 20분 냅뒀다 마시거나,

병째 에어레이션을 며칠 간 시켜놓고 마시는게 훨씬 좋게 느껴진다.

충분히 에어레이션이 된 상태에서 마시게 되면,

뚜따에서는 잘 안느껴지던 기분좋은 견과류의 맛이 혀에 챱챱 남는다.

그리고 끝에서는 다음 한모금을 빨리 부추기는,

에스파가 부릅니다!!

Salty & Sweet!!

바로 반칙 맛조합 단짠단짠 완성!

피니쉬는 역시 그 동네 출신답게 후...후훗. 시..실은 나도있있지 하면서 아주 허약한 피트와 스모크가 여운을 적당히 빼준

다.

전체적으로 에어레이션 될수록 맛있는 위스키.

셰리성애자들에게 크게 어필될 정도의 그런 꾸덕한 맛은 없지만, 향긋, 시트러스, 단짠단짠에 피트&스모크까지 복합적인

맛과 향이 꽤 밸런스가 잘 잡혀있는 위스키이다.

그러나, 그래도 몇가지 단점을 꼽아보자면,

킬커란 8년CS나 킬커란 12년을 마셨을때 기대했던 16년의 그 기대치를 충족해주지는 못한다.

분명 맛은 있지만, 16년을 생각한 나의 기대치라 함은

막!!막!!!!이이이이이ㅣ만큼이이이마아아안큼인데!?아아니8년이나12년이이정도인데16년은그럼대체어떻다는거얏!?

세상에마상에심지어같은동네캠밸타운출신미친맛도리스프링뱅크15년보다1년이나더먹었어??대..대박그렇다면이건무조

건대존맛이겠지?후아미쵸따!!먹다울면어뜨카지!?놀라서오줌싸버리는거아니야!!??기저귀차고마실까!!??변기에앉아서

마셔야되나!!??뭐가됐든옷은다벗고먹어야겠지???지릴테니까!!??어뜨카지!!??

뭐... 대략 이정도였는데 그정도의 기대치는 만족시켜주지는 못한다.

너무 큰 기대는 하지 않고 먹는게 좋은 편.

(아니 내가 기대를 너무했나..)

그리고, 뭐 정책이고 나발이고 케이스나 다시 만들어줬음 좋겠다.

스프링뱅크나 킬커란이나 집없이 외롭게 서있는거 볼때마다 불쌍해 죽겠음.

끝으로,

매번 느끼지만 캠밸타운 위스키들은 역시 늘 맛있음은 분명하다.
2023년 병입을 언제 할지는 모르겠지만, 혹시라도 셰리 비중이 더 늘거나하면

고민없이 바로 살테니까 살 수 있는 기회 좀 더 주세요. 킬커란 행님들아...

열심히 더 열심히 일해서 위스키 좀 쫙쫙 많이 좀 뽑아내달라 이말입니다!

Even though I'd had very satisfying experiences with every Campbeltown whisky I'd tried so far — and especially with Kilkerran 8 CS Batch 5 and Kilkerran 12 from the same Glengyle distillery —

I hesitated juuust a little before finally bringing this one home:

Kilkerran 16

Bottled June 21, 2022 (70% bourbon casks, 30% sherry casks)

It's hard to find around here, the price is a little disappointing,

and the sherry proportion seems a bit lacking to satisfy a sherry fanatic

(you can tell from the color too — the bourbon cask share is on the high side),

so I hesitated a bit, but

thanks to the trust I've built up in that neighborhood (Campbeltown), the fact that it's currently Kilkerran's eldest brother,

and reviews saying the 2022 bottling of Kilkerran 16 tastes great,

I grabbed hold of my wavering heart, yelled "whatever, LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO,"

and when I came to my senses, it was in my hands.

And though this is something I've gotten used to by now,

I bought it through overseas direct shipping at a price not much different from Korean liquor shops, like a total sucker, hehe....

(Of course, there are hardly any Korean liquor shops selling it in the first place. The accessibility is total crap.)

Kilkerran, which feels like Campbeltown's badass "experienced rookie," first released this 16-year-old in 2020,

and if you look it up, the cask blend ratio is different for 2020, 2021 and 2022.

(It's a core range product so it'll come out eventually, but it seems the 2023 hasn't been bottled yet. Who knows, maybe the blend ratio will change yet again.)

2020: 96% bourbon, 4% Marsala

2021: 75% bourbon, 25% sherry

2022: 70% bourbon, 30% sherry

That's roughly how it goes, and

they only bottle it once a year, in fairly small quantities, so maybe because it's hard to get, there isn't much info out there.

Huh? And what do we do when there isn't much info? I buy it and taste it myself, duh!!!!!!????

First, once it's in the glass,

probably because of the high bourbon cask share, it takes on a yellow hue.

Just a tiny bit darker than the Balvenie 12 Single Barrel.

(Women could probably describe the color in way more detail, but this seems to be about the limit of what I can do..)

The nose is pleasantly fragrant, with about as much citrus as you'd smell on your fingers after squeezing an orange peel.

Even at 46% right after opening the bottle, there's no alcohol burn charging at you.

(Is this the power of 16 years...)

And true to its Campbeltown roots, you can barely detect any peat on the nose either.

Toward the end of the nose, a little vanilla-ish sweetness from the bourbon cask character comes in too.

The palate follows the same grain as the nose, holding on to a bit of citrus.
Oh, and personally, I find Kilkerran 16 much better if, rather than drinking it right after opening, you pour it and leave it in the glass for at least 10 or 20 minutes,

or let it aerate in the bottle for a few days before drinking.

When you drink it well aerated,

a lovely nutty flavor you barely get right after opening clings to your tongue, smack smack.

And at the end, egging you on to take the next sip quickly —

performed by aespa!!

Salty & Sweet!!

There it is: the unfair cheat-code combo, salty-sweet-salty-sweet, complete!

The finish, true to its hometown, goes "heh... heheh. A-actually, I've got some too~" as a very feeble peat and smoke draw out the lingering finish just right.

Overall, a whisky that gets tastier the more it airs out.

It doesn't have the kind of thick, rich depth that would really wow sherry fanatics, but it's a whisky with a complex nose and palate — fragrant, citrusy, salty-sweet, and even peat & smoke — that's pretty well balanced.

That said, if I had to pick a few downsides,

it doesn't live up to the expectations for a 16-year-old that I built up after drinking Kilkerran 8 CS and Kilkerran 12.

It's definitely tasty, but my expectations for the 16 were like

SOOO!! SOOOO!!!! THIIIIIIS MUCH, THIIIIS MUUUUCH!? I MEAN IF THE 8 OR 12 IS THIS GOOD THEN WHAT ON EARTH IS THE 16 GONNA BE LIKE!?

OMG, OMFG, IT'S EVEN A WHOLE YEAR OLDER THAN THE INSANELY DELICIOUS SPRINGBANK 15 FROM THE SAME CAMPBELTOWN NEIGHBORHOOD?? W-WOW THEN THIS HAS TO BE ABSOLUTELY, INSANELY GOOD, RIGHT? WHOA I'M LOSING IT!! WHAT IF I CRY WHILE DRINKING IT!? WHAT IF I'M SO SHOCKED I PEE MYSELF!!?? SHOULD I WEAR A DIAPER!!?? SHOULD I DRINK IT SITTING ON THE TOILET!!?? EITHER WAY I SHOULD STRIP NAKED BEFORE DRINKING, RIGHT??? 'CAUSE I'M DEFINITELY GONNA WET MYSELF!!?? WHAT DO I DO!!??

Well... it was roughly at that level, and it doesn't satisfy that level of expectation.

Better to drink it without expecting too much.

(Or did I just expect way too much..)

Also, policy or whatever, I really wish they'd bring back the box.

Every time I see Springbank or Kilkerran standing there all alone without a home, I feel so sorry for them.

Lastly,

I feel it every single time, but Campbeltown whiskies are, without a doubt, always delicious.
I don't know when they'll bottle the 2023, but if the sherry share goes up or something,

I'll buy it right away without a second thought, so please give me more chances to buy it, Kilkerran big bros...

What I'm saying is: work hard, even harder, and crank out lots and lots of whisky!
