접근성 거지같은 형을 닮아 점점 구하기가 힘들어지는 킬커라니....

위스키를 본격적으로 맛을 보기 시작할때쯤, 피트도 배워본다고 아드벡10년을 마셔보고 내가 이건 남이 사줘도 안마신다

하면서 입문과 동시에 은퇴를 선언하면서 피트와 아주진한 실선을 그었고, 한동안은 피트에 피만 들어갔다 하면 피를 트하

며 발작 일으키던 때가 있었다.

그렇게 시간이 조금 흘러 ‘응나셰리성애자~응피트는오염~응병원냄새꺼져~’ 하며 지내다 어느날 우연히 갑작스럽게 킬커

란 8년CS 배치5번이였나 6번이였나를 경험하게 되는데....

‘이 나는 얼마나 소수의 경험으로 전체를 판단하는 알량하고, 소심하고, 편협하며, 생각의 틀이 좁고, 열지 못하는 아니 열

생각조차 안하는, 흥선대원군 뺨때기도 냅다 후려칠 정도의 폐쇄적 사고 방식과, 경험을 두려워 하는 겁쟁이 새퀴였던가’

를 느끼버리고 만다.

물론 아드벡의 그런 피트감은 아니였지만 킬커란 8년을 마시면서 느낀건 피트가 부여하는 위스키의 다양성과 피트의 포용

성에 놀랐다는 것이다.

그렇게 극적으로 거부했던 피트의 그 향이 오히려 노즈에서부터 다른 향들을 감싸주며, 노빠꾸 극대노하며 급발진하듯 튀

는 느낌이 아니라 오히려 셰리를 받쳐주는 느낌이 들었고, 끝에서나 마!이게 피트다! 내눈똑바로봣! 하고 개무서운 얼굴로

쳐다보지만 세상 부드럽게 ‘어때?좋았어?’ 라고 묻는 느낌이 들었다.

셰리피트라는 새로운 장르에 맛을 들인 순간이였다.

그렇게 킬커란과 그 형아라고 불리는 스프링 뱅크에 호기심이 생겼고, 갑자기 더더 구하기 어려워지는 캠밸타운 위스키에

화가 나기 시작할 무렵, 의외로 어렵지 않게 라고 쓰고 걍 돈을 더 줬다라고 얘기하면서 킬커란 12년을 구하게 됬다.

솔직히 다시 놀랐다.

이정도로 괜찮다고..?(물론가격생각하면 씁쓸해지지만)

적당한 피트,시트러스,쉐리,우디,끝에 스모키와 짠맛 까지.

엔트리 라인이 이렇게 복합적일 수가 있는건가 싶었다.

물론 8년cs에서 느꼈던 그 와인의 탄닌감 같은 기분좋은 혓바닥 조임까지 느껴지진 않았지만 12년도 꽤나 훌륭하게 느껴

졌다.

약간의 피트를 즐길 수 있게 된다는게 꽤 많은 혜택을 받는 기분이 들면서 문득 스치는 생각이 아니 그럼 동생이 이정도면

형은 얼마나 대단한건데!? 형아!?형아!! 보고싶어!!먹고싶어!!

(추후에 보게되지만...)

이쯤에서 다시금 굳어지던 생각.

위스키 마실 땐 남의 말 듣지 말자.

세상은 넓고 맛있는 위스키는 많다.

편견을 버리자.

평생 위린이로 살자.

Kilkerran, getting harder and harder to find, just like its big brother with the godawful accessibility....

Around the time I started tasting whisky seriously, I tried Ardbeg 10 to learn about peat, declared "I wouldn't drink this even if someone else paid for it," announced my retirement at the very moment of my debut, and drew a very thick line between me and peat. For a while there, if anything had so much as a "pea" in it, I'd practically spit blood and throw a fit.

Then a little time went by, and I was living my "lol I'm a sherry fanatic~ lol peat is contamination~ lol hospital smell, get lost~" life, when one day, completely by chance and out of the blue, I got to try Kilkerran 8 CS — was it Batch 5 or Batch 6....

and I ended up realizing: "What a petty, timid, narrow-minded coward I was — judging the whole thing from so few experiences, with a mindset so closed it couldn't open (no, wouldn't even think of opening), closed enough to slap the Heungseon Daewongun (the famously isolationist Joseon regent) right across the face, and scared of new experiences."

Of course, it wasn't Ardbeg-style peat, but what I felt drinking Kilkerran 8 was amazement at the diversity peat brings to a whisky and at how embracing peat can be.

That peat aroma I had so dramatically rejected was instead wrapping around the other aromas right from the nose. Rather than bursting out like a no-brakes, rage-fueled sudden acceleration, it felt like it was actually propping up the sherry, and only at the end did it glare at me with a terrifying face going "Oi! THIS is peat! Look me in the eye!" — and yet it felt like it was asking, in the gentlest voice in the world, "So? Did you like it?"

That was the moment I got hooked on a new genre: sherry-peat.

And so I got curious about Kilkerran and its so-called big brother Springbank, and right around the time I was starting to get angry about Campbeltown whiskies suddenly getting harder and harder to find, I managed to get my hands on Kilkerran 12 surprisingly without much trouble — which is my way of writing "I just paid extra."

Honestly, I was surprised all over again.

It's THIS good..? (Though it does get bittersweet when you think about the price)

Moderate peat, citrus, sherry, woodiness, and at the end even smoke and saltiness.

I wondered how an entry-level line could be this complex.

Of course, I didn't get that pleasant, wine-tannin-like grip on the tongue that I felt in the 8 CS, but the 12 felt pretty excellent too.

Feeling like being able to enjoy a bit of peat gives me quite a lot of perks, a thought suddenly flashed through my head: wait, if the little brother is this good, how amazing must the big brother be!? Big bro!? Big bro!! I miss you!! I wanna drink you!!

At this point, a thought that was setting in even more firmly.

When drinking whisky, don't listen to what other people say.

The world is wide and there are plenty of delicious whiskies.

Let go of your prejudices.

Let's live as a whisky newbie for life.
