아직 마셔보지 못한 스카치도 많은데, 굳이 제3국 위스키를 마셔볼 필요가 있을까 싶기도 했고,

아니야 그래도 한번은 마셔보자 마셔보자 하면서도 늘 기회가 될때면 구매 후순위로 미루면서,

좀처럼 쉽게 경험해보지 못했던 대만의 위스키,

이러다간 평생 안 사마시겠다 싶어서 원래는 면세점 찬스 1L짜리로 사는것이 국룰(?)이지만, 막상 면세찬스때는 또 안살

거같아서 긔냥 리쿼샵에서 눈탱이 쳐맞고 구매했었다.

(근데 요즘은 리쿼샵에서도 잘 안보이는 것 같다. 나때문인가????히히)

개인적으로 보틀 디자인은 클래식한 느낌을 좋아하는데, 카발란은 보틀도, 라벨도, 라벨의 컬러도, 뚜껑도 막 그리 클래식

한 맛은 없지만, 뭐..세련된 느낌은 있다.

하지만 케이스는 맘에 든다.

냉장고 문 마냥 열수 있고 자석까지 붙어 있어서 착착 열고 닫는 맛이 있다.

그리고 케이스안에 조그맣게 말려서 리본으로 묶인 종이가 들어 있는데,

앞면엔 지들 상받은거 자랑질 좀 적혀있고, 위스키 스펙도 적혀있다.

뒷면엔 테이스팅 노트가 적혀있음.

근데 이게 또 뭐라고 괜히 신경쓴 모습도 보이고, 좀 고급져보이고 막 그러넹ㅎㅎ

올때 메로나!

내가 구매한 보틀은 21년 7월 병입에 57.1%짜리.

Cask Strength 치고는 아주 약간 섭섭한 도수의 보틀이지만 뭐~괜찮아 맛있으면 되니끄아~!

(카발란의 솔리스트 라인은 전부 Cask Strength 제품이다.)

대만 기후 특성 상, 천사놈들이 삥 뜯는 증발량이 스카치 위스키 대비 4~5배는 많이 되고, 그만큼 오크통의 영혼을 빨아들

이는 속도도 빠른것으로 알고 있어서, NAS인것은 크게 개의치 않았다.

그 사실을 몰랐다 하더라도, 내츄랄칼라 인데 색이 엄청 진한걸 보고나면 빨리 마셔보고 싶다는 생각만 든다.

그래서 후딱 따 마셔보면,

알콜이 코를 살짝 찌르지만, 흘려보내고 나면 과일의 달달한 향들이 뿜어져나온다.

꾸덕한 셰리와는 결이 다르지만, 과일의 눅진함이 느껴짐.

팔렛도 상당히 달콤달콤하고 약하게 시트러스도 느껴짐.

그러다 끝에서 느닷없이 스카치 위스키에서는 못느껴본 멜론?이 스파이시랑 같이 튀어나온다.

갑자기? (올때 메로나를!?)

카발란에서 말하는 열대과일이 이건가 싶다.

빨간맛 메로나랄까...

(그렇다고 스파이시가 강한편은 아님.)

독특하지만 전혀 거부감 없이 입에 착 붙음.

맛이써!!

피니쉬도 여전히 달코미하고 메로나 덕분인지 부드럽게 여운이 길게 남는다.

이 열대과일이라는 느낌이 기분좋게 느껴진다.

아아 위스키 한잔에 대만으로 가버렷!!!!!

쨍하게 파란라벨과 메로나가 잘 어우러져서 왠지 여름에 마시면 갬성이 좀더 충만해질거 같다.

맛있어서 빨리 비워지고 있는데, 좀 참고 냄겼다가 한여름 밤에 에어컨 틀어놓고 마셔야겠다.ㅎㅎ

끝으로 카발란을 마시며 다시금 느끼지만 역시 편견을 버려야 한다.

스카치고 제3국이고 나발이고 맛있으면 되는거다!

이 참에 암룻도 한병 사서 마셔보까???

한잔 마시고 인도댄스 추는거아닌가 모르겠다.

There are still so many Scotches I haven't tried yet, so I kept wondering whether I really needed to bother with a whisky from a "third country,"

and even while telling myself "no, come on, let's try it at least once, just once," every time the chance came up it got pushed to the bottom of my shopping list.

So here it is, the Taiwanese whisky I somehow never got around to experiencing:

I figured at this rate I'd never buy it in my life. The unwritten rule (?) is to grab the 1L at duty-free, but I had a feeling that when the duty-free chance actually came around I'd skip it again,

so I just walked into a liquor shop and got totally ripped off.

(Though lately I don't really see it at liquor shops either. Is that because of me???? hehe)

Personally I like classic-looking bottle designs, and Kavalan - the bottle, the label, the label colour, the cap - doesn't have much of that classic flavour,

but, well... it does look sleek.

The case, though, I like.

It opens like a fridge door and even has a magnet, so it snaps open and shut really satisfyingly.

And inside the case there's a small sheet of paper rolled up and tied with a ribbon;

the front shows off a bit about all the awards they've won and lists the whisky's specs.

The back has the tasting notes.

It's such a little thing, but it shows they put some thought into it, and it looks kinda fancy and all lol

Grab me a Melona on your way home! (Melona = the Korean melon ice bar)

The bottle I bought was bottled in July 2021 at 57.1%.

For a cask strength that's a slightly disappointing ABV, but eh~ it's fine, as long as it tastes good~!

(Kavalan's Solist line is all cask strength.)

Because of Taiwan's climate, the angel thugs shake down about 4-5 times more in evaporation than with Scotch, and as far as I know the spirit sucks the soul out of the oak that much faster too, so the fact that it's NAS didn't bother me much.

Even if I hadn't known that, one look at how incredibly dark it is despite being natural colour and all you can think is "I need to try this, now."

So I cracked it open in a flash and had a sip:

the alcohol stings the nose a little, but once you let it pass, sweet fruity aromas come bursting out.

It's a different texture from thick, dense sherry, but you do feel a sticky, jammy fruitiness.

The palate is pretty sweet-sweet too, with a faint touch of citrus.

Then, out of nowhere at the end, a melon(?) I've never gotten from a Scotch jumps out together with some spice.

Wait, what? (Somebody actually brought me a Melona!?)

I guess this is the "tropical fruit" Kavalan keeps talking about.

Like a red-flavoured Melona or something...

(Not that the spice is strong, though.)

It's unique, but it sticks to the palate with zero resistance.

Tasty!!

The finish stays sweetie-sweet too, and maybe thanks to the Melona it lingers smoothly and long.

That "tropical fruit" feeling is really pleasant.

Ahh, one glass of whisky and I'm off to Taiwan!!!!!

The vivid blue label and the Melona go so well together that I feel like drinking it in summer would max out the vibes.

It's so good it's emptying fast, but I should hold back and save some for a midsummer night with the AC blasting. hehe

Finally, drinking Kavalan reminds me once again: you really have to drop your prejudices.

Scotch, third country, whatever - if it tastes good, that's all that matters!

While I'm at it, should I buy a bottle of Amrut and try that too???

No guarantee I won't break into an Indian dance after one glass.
