GlenMorangie Extremely Rare 18years

역시 그(?)산하에 있는 위스키 답게 일단 케이스부터 뭔가 고급지게 구매욕구를 자극한다.

코어레인지 싱글몰트 18년 숙성 위스키를 냉장고 열듯이 열리는 케이스를 적용하고,(물론 가까이서 보면 싸구려 재질과

마감이지만 아 어쨌든!?)

보틀디자인도 고오급지게 쓰는 그런 주류회사가 어디있겠나 싶다.

당장 맥캘란 18년 셰리의 케이스를 떠올려 보자. (그저 까만 종이깍대기....)

그에 비하면 굉장히 훌륭하다 할 수 있겠다.

(와인엔모어만 가봐도 글렌모렌지 18년은 유리장 안에 전시해놓는곳도 있다.)

그럼 맛도 맥캘란 18년 만큼 훌륭하냐?

무난무난해!
바로 뚜따해본다면,

노즈에서는 글렌모렌지 오리지널 한잔 마시고 난 후의 잔에 남은 잔향의 달달한 바닐라 그 느낌이 초반에 올라온다.

모렌지 특유의 그 버번캐스크의 달작달작한 바닐라향.

액면으로 보이는 숙성년수 덕분인지는 모르겠으나, 거부감 드는 부즈도 없다.

시간을 두고 천천히 냅두면 애정하는 엔트리급 싱글몰트인 라산타랑 결이 비슷해진다.

라산타 에어링 잘된 보틀을 꺼내서 한잔 따라서 비교 시음도 해봄.

같이 따라놓고 마시면 확실히 또 틀리긴하다.

라산타 보다 전체적으로 밸런스가 좋다라는 느낌이 바로 듬.

위스키 잘 몰라도 두개 똑같이 따라놓고 마신다면 차이가 두드러지게 나타남.

모렌지 증류소의 위스키들이 전체적으로 가볍고 무난하며, 꽃같이 화사한 편이라고 생각하는데,

거기에 올로로쏘 캐스크피니쉬 탓인지 약간의 셰리로 건포도스로운 무게감이 더해져있다.

전체적으로 무난하고 누구에게나 권하기 쉬운 위스키.

만약 여러종류의 위스키를 마시게된다면, 첫잔으로 괜찮겠다고 생각이 든다.

모렌지가 만드는 무난함이라는 장르랄까나.....

장점이 무난한 느낌이라면, 단점도 무난한 느낌인듯 싶다.

개성넘치는 싱글몰트 위스키들 사이에서의 비교를 한다면,

이거다 싶은 포인트가 없다.

대중적이고 무난한 부드러운 18년 숙성의 위스키.

그런 비슷한 느낌을 받았던 위스키를 경험에 비춰 떠올리자면,

글렌피딕18년과 포지션이 비슷한 느낌이다.

(개취로는 피딕 18년이 좀 더 입에 맞는듯...)

분명 부담없이 맛있지만, 위친자들이 바라는 18년 근처의 세월을 견뎌오며 병입된 위스키로써의 깊이는 부족한듯 싶다.

하지만 위스키에게는 또 에어레이션이라는 2막이 존재하니까.....

생각을 바꿔서 에어링 잘된 라산타도 맛있으니까...18년에게도 시간을 준다면.......

(근데 에어레이션이 마법을 부린대도 또 사먹을지는 모르겠....)

True to a whisky under that (?) umbrella, even the box alone feels luxe and stirs up the urge to buy.

Putting a core-range 18-year-old single malt in a box that opens like a fridge door (sure, up close the material and finish are cheap, but anyway!?),

and giving it a fancy-schmancy bottle design too - I can't think of any other drinks company that does that.

Just picture the box of the Macallan 18 Sherry. (Just a plain black paper box....)

Compared to that, you could say this one is excellent.

(Even if you just go to Wine & More, some stores display the Glenmorangie 18 inside a glass cabinet.)

So, does it taste as great as the Macallan 18, then?

It's fine. Just fine!
Tasting it right after opening,

on the nose, the first thing that comes up early on is that sweet vanilla feel of the leftover scent in the glass after you've finished a glass of Glenmorangie Original.

That signature Glenmorangie bourbon-cask sweet-sweet vanilla aroma.

Not sure if it's thanks to the age statement on the label, but there's no off-putting booze either.

Leave it slowly for a while and it becomes similar in character to Lasanta, an entry-level single malt I love.

I also took out a well-aired bottle of Lasanta and poured a glass for a side-by-side tasting.

Poured next to each other, they're definitely different after all.

I immediately got the feeling that it's more balanced overall than the Lasanta.

Even if you don't know much about whisky, pour the two side by side and drink them, and the difference is obvious.

I think Glenmorangie distillery's whiskies are generally light, easygoing and floral-bright,

and here, maybe because of the oloroso cask finish, a little sherried, raisin-y weight is added.

Overall, an easygoing whisky that's easy to recommend to anyone.

If you're going to drink several kinds of whisky, I think it'd make a good first glass.

You could say it's a genre called 'easygoing', made by Glenmorangie.....

If its strength is being easygoing, I guess its weakness is being easygoing too.

If you compare it among single malt whiskies overflowing with personality,

there's no point where you go, 'This is it!'

A popular, easygoing, smooth 18-year-old whisky.

If I think back on a whisky that gave me a similar feeling from my experience,

it feels like it's in a similar position to the Glenfiddich 18.

(To my personal taste, the Fiddich 18 suits me a bit better...)

It's definitely tasty and easy to drink, but it seems to lack the depth whisky nerds hope for from a whisky bottled after enduring nearly 18 years.

But whisky also has a second act called aeration, right.....

Thinking about it differently, a well-aired Lasanta is delicious too... so if I give the 18 some time as well.......

(But even if aeration works its magic, I'm not sure I'd buy it again....)
