싱글몰트에 대한 경험이 없는 누군가가 블렌디드와 싱글몰트의 차이가 무엇인지 물어올때,

느닷없이,

아니~ 싱글몰트는 맥캘란18년부터인거 모리나!!??들어는봐찌??맥캘란!?응??

우리 맥캘란18년 오손~도손 까먹으면서 싱글몰트라는것에 대해서 진지하게 의견을 좀 나누어보까??

물론 술은 너가 사고 말이야아아아앙~

라고 하면 아마 바로 얼굴에 침 맞을거다.

위스키를 구매하고 마시는데 있어서 구매난이도와 접근성(가격포함)은 상당히 중요한 요소이다.

특히 낯선 위스키에 대해서는 더욱더.

비단 위스키 뿐만 아니라 모든 취미생활이 다 그러하겠지만,

낯선것의 경험을 위한 초기 비용은 너무 많이 들어서는 안되고 그럴 마음도 없을테니까.

위스키 가격이 '본격 저세상 지옥열차' 를 타기 직전까지만 해도 글렌드로낙12년은 남대문에서 만원짜리 7~8장 정도만

건내주면 쉽게 구할 수 있는, 그 가격에 맛볼 수 있는 아주 맛있는 싱글몰트 위스키였다.

물론 지금도 맥친놈(12세,재수없음) 발친놈(12세,얄미움)에 비하면 그나마 그동안의 가격 상승폭이 적었던 위스키이기도

하다.

(하지만 12년만 그렇고 위에 형아들은 아무래도 뭘 잘못드셨나 굉장히 삐뚤어지기 시작함....)

12년 숙성은 요즘 다시 10만원 이하대로 내려오고 있는 느낌이기도 하고, 여느 리쿼샵에서도 남아돌지는 않아도 적당히

는 보유하고 있는 추세여서, 구매난이도나 접근성 면에서 크게 단점은 없다고 할 수 있겠다.

그래서 경험 없는 누군가가 나에게 싱글몰트가 뭐라고 생각하세요? 하고 묻는다면, 난 글렌드로낙 12년을 한잔 따라줄것

이다.

싱글몰트를 궁금해 하는 사람들에게 마치 유투브 숏츠 마냥 쉽고 가볍고 편안하고 빠르게 설명해주는 한잔이 될테니까.

싱글몰트 입문서

글렌드로낙12년은 말이죠오옹~~

우선 한잔 따라서 잔을 코끝에 대고 향을 맡으면,

달큰한 향과 바닐라의 느낌이 코 속으로 사악 밀고 들어오다가 알콜!

따가워진 코를 비비고, 다시 맡아보면 뭔가 말린 과일 같은 향이 코 속으로 사악 밀고 들어오다가 알콜!

맛도 향에서 맡은바와 마찬가지로 건포도와 사과 짬뽕된듯한 달콤상콤한 맛이 살짝 느껴지다가 스파이시!

혀가 약간 짜리한 기분을 뒤로하고 다시 혀에 올리면 가볍게 오크통의 느낌도 나고, 달달한 맛도 느껴지다가 스파이시!

(알콜부즈와 매운맛은 에어레이션이 좀 되고 나면 힘이 좀 빠지긴 한다.)

피니쉬는 개인적으로는 그리 여운이 길게 남거나 하는 편은 아님.

전체적으로 입문자들에게나 가벼운 술자리에 적합한 가성비가 아주 좋은 싱글몰트 위스키이고, 부들부들유들유들한 어중

떠중 블렌디드들과는 다르게 확실히 개성이 있고, 차별적인 느낌을 받을 수 있는 위스키라 할 수 있겠다.

아 그리고 이런 잘 만들어진 엔트리급 위스키들이 가지는 공통점이 또 하나 있는데,

그건 바로 다음을 궁금하게 한다는 것이다.

'시간이 지나서 다음에 따라 마시면 어떨까? 진짜 더 맛있어지나?' '같은 증류소의 다른 숙성년수는 어떨까?더 맛있을까?'

'이 위스키에서는 이런 부분이 좋았는데 숙성년수가 오래되면 그 부분이 더 부각 되있는건가?' 등등 이 낯선 경험의 다음

을 생각나게 만드는 위스키들.

글렌드로낙 12년이 나에게는 그런 위스키였다.

에어레이션이 궁금해졌었고, 다른 숙성년수들이 궁금해졌었고, 내가 느낀 이셰리의 더 깊은 맛이 궁금해졌었다.

그렇게 궁금증을 쫓다보니 지금은 내 최애 증류소가 되버렸넹ㅎㅎ

When someone with no single malt experience asks you what the difference is between a blend and a single malt,

and out of nowhere you go,

"Whaaat~ don't you know single malt starts at Macallan 18!!?? You've at least heard of it, right?? Macallan!? Huh??

Why don't we cozy up and polish off a Macallan 18 together and have a serious chat about this thing called single malt??

You're buying, of course, riiiight~"

you'll probably get spat on in the face on the spot.

When it comes to buying and drinking whisky, how easy it is to buy and how accessible it is (price included) are pretty important factors.

Especially for an unfamiliar whisky.

This goes for any hobby, not just whisky -

the upfront cost of trying something new shouldn't be too high, and nobody's in the mood to pay that anyway.

Right up until whisky prices boarded the 'express train to hell', GlenDronach 12 was a really tasty single malt you could easily get at Namdaemun Market for just seven or eight 10,000-won bills - amazing for the price.

Of course, even now, compared to that Mac punk (age 12, insufferable) and that Bal punk (age 12, smug), it's one of the whiskies whose price has gone up the least.

(But that's only the 12 - its big brothers must have eaten something bad, because they've started going seriously off the rails....)

The 12-year-old seems to be dropping back under 100,000 won these days, and while liquor shops aren't overflowing with it, most have a reasonable amount in stock, so you could say it has no real downside in terms of availability or accessibility.

So if someone with no experience asks me, "What do you think single malt is?", I'll pour them a glass of GlenDronach 12.

For anyone curious about single malt, it'll be the one glass that explains it easily, lightly, comfortably and quickly - like a YouTube Short.

A Single Malt Primer

So, GlenDronach 12, you seeee~~

First, pour a glass, bring it to the tip of your nose and take a sniff:

a sweet aroma and a hint of vanilla come sliding into your nose and then - ALCOHOL!

Rub your stinging nose, sniff again, and something like dried fruit comes sliding into your nose and then - ALCOHOL!

The taste, just like the nose, gives you a faint sweet-and-tangy flavour like raisins and apples all mixed up, and then - SPICE!

Put that tingly-tongue feeling behind you, take another sip, and you get a light touch of oak cask and some sweetness, and then - SPICE!

(The boozy burn and the heat do lose some of their punch once it's had a bit of aeration.)

Personally, I don't find the finish lingers all that long.

Overall, it's a great-value single malt that's ideal for beginners and casual drinking sessions, and unlike those soft, smooth, wishy-washy middle-of-the-road blends, it definitely has personality and gives you something distinctive.

Oh, and there's one more thing these well-made entry-level whiskies have in common:

they make you curious about what comes next.

'What if I pour it again after some time has passed? Does it really get tastier?' 'What about other ages from the same distillery? Are they tastier?'

'I liked this part of this whisky - does that part get more pronounced with longer ageing?' and so on - whiskies that make you think about the next step after that unfamiliar experience.

For me, GlenDronach 12 was that kind of whisky.

I got curious about aeration, curious about the other ages, and curious about a deeper version of this sherry I'd tasted.

And chasing that curiosity, it's somehow ended up becoming my favourite distillery, hehe
