라가불린 16년 & 디스틸러스 에디션 2021

개인적으로 아일라쪽 피트 위스키를 내 돈주고 바틀로 구입할 수 있는 마지노선이라고 생각하는 증류소가 라가불린이고, 그중에서도 16년 말고는 흥미가 다소 떨어지는 편이였는데 정말 어쩌다 구매했던 디스틸러스 에디션 2021보틀.

라가불린16년에서 느껴지던 초반에 짧게 파고드는 피트와 그윽하고 부드럽게 퍼지는 스모크의 그 결은 비슷하다.

차이점이라면 건포도스러운 달큰함이 좀 더 강해졌는데 이게 애초에 셰리를 즐기는 사람들에겐 기분좋게 다가올 만큼 좋게 느껴진다.😋

16년과 숙성년수도 비슷해서인지 콱찌르는 알콜부즈나 스파이스도 느껴지진 않는다.
잔에 따르고 시간을 적당히 주면서 한모금씩 넘길때마다 점점 더 달큰향 향이 퍼지고 스모크도 안정적으로 목구녕과 콧구녕에 남는다.

개인적으로는 16년보다 맛있다고 느끼고는 있는데, 이게 그동안의 경험상으로, 피트위스키들은 에어레이션 따라 맛의 변화가 큰 느낌을 많이 받아왔어서 이걸 오래두고 천천히 변화를 즐기며 마셔야할지, 지금 정도의 느낌에서 빠르게 호로로록 비워야할지 감을 모르겠다.

일단 이쯤에서 바이알병에 한잔 담아놓긴 해야겠다🤔

디스틸러스에디션 2022도 있었던걸로 기억하는데 괜시리 걔도 궁금해지네ㅎㅎ🧐

Personally, Lagavulin is the distillery I consider my absolute limit — the last line — for Islay peated whiskies I'd buy a whole bottle of with my own money, and even then I was never all that interested in anything other than the 16. This is the Distillers Edition 2021 bottle I bought, honestly kind of by accident.

The grain is similar to Lagavulin 16: peat that digs in briefly at the start and smoke that spreads deep and soft.

The difference is that the raisiny sweetness has gotten stronger, which comes across as pleasantly good for people who enjoy sherry in the first place.😋

Maybe because it's similar in age to the 16, there's no sharp, stabbing alcohol burn or spice either.
Pour it in the glass, give it a proper bit of time, and with every sip the sweet aroma spreads more and more, while the smoke lingers steadily in your throat and nostrils.

Personally, I feel it's tastier than the 16, but from my experience so far, peated whiskies tend to change a lot in flavor with aeration, so I have no idea whether I should keep it for a long time and slowly enjoy the changes, or slurp it down quickly while it tastes like this.

For now, I should at least save a glass in a sample vial at this point🤔

I remember there being a Distillers Edition 2022 too, and for some reason I'm getting curious about that one as well hehe🧐
