Winter delicacy: the oyster luge

You could call it a treat that whisky lovers only get to enjoy in winter.

According to the big bros at Bowmore, the great house of peat,

first you pick up the half shell and just slurp a little of the juice,

and once that briny, fishy oyster flavor spreads through your mouth,

you take a sip of Bowmore with its killer peat & smoke,

then this time you pop the oyster into your mouth,
and pour a shot of Bowmore into the empty oyster shell — just like those sea-squirt-shell soju cups in Korea — and drink it, and the combo of oyster, peat and smoke is to die for!

That's what they kindly explained, with pictures.

(By the way, sorry to the Bowmore bros, but this time I had it with Lagavulin....???)

And Haruki Murakami — a name even I've heard of, despite being about as far from a reader as you can get — has a passage about this oyster luge in his book <If Our Language Were Whisky>, and that big bro describes pouring the whisky into the shell with the oyster still in it and slurping them down together.

(Apparently Big Bro Haruki was a whisky maniac too)

I tried it both the Bowmore bros' way and Big Bro Haruki's way, and personally, doing it Haruki's way somehow makes my mouth feel fuller with rich flavors and aromas, and it seems to make the oyster even more special,

so I'm team "pour it on" when it comes to whisky.

I mean, you could say it's too flimsy to really call it cooking, but in looks and taste it feels like a pretty legit dish made with all sorts of ingredients and spices.

All I did was give a half shell a sip of whisky...?
The collab of Lagavulin 16's smoke and the oyster is a real delicacy

To say a bit more about the flavor and aroma of Lagavulin 16,

true to its Islay birth, a medium level of peat wafts up, and the smoke comes on fairly thick.

As for the body of that smoke — there's a Japanese sake called hirezake, where you drop a charred pufferfish fin into sake; the aroma is different, but it's packed with smoke of almost that same weight.

At the tail end of the nose, a sweet, musty sherry follows in too.

Other than that, there's no off-putting alcohol burn to speak of.

On the palate, there's a fair amount of moderate peat and sweet sherry, and the texture on the tongue is remarkably silky.

It makes me think, "Ah, so this is what a slightly classy peated whisky is like."

The finish fills every last hole in your head with smoke, like a smokehouse party just broke out, and it lingers quite a long time.
Overall, you could call it a silky, classy peated whisky full of smoke and sherry.

That said, this positioning might not appeal enough to hardcore peat addicts or hardcore sherry addicts with very clear-cut tastes.

It's neither super-strong peat nor a suuuper thiiick sherry vibe...

Still, Lagavulin 16 has a personality all its own and pretty good balance, so I find myself reaching for it every now and then, and it's definitely a great whisky to enjoy with oysters like this in the cold winter.

Whisky really does get more fun the more you drink.

I'm looking forward to winter again hehe

N...next time I'll drink it with Bowmore, okay???
