이번 스페인 여행에서 꼭 경험하고 싶었던 세가지 중 하나가 바로 셰리와인이였다. 그것도 올로로소 셰리와인.
위스키도 마찬가지지만 깊게 알고 싶은 술일수록 꼭 보틀로 사마시는 타입이라 셰리와인도 잔술로 마시기보단 꼭 보틀로 사서 오롯이 한병을 다 비우고 싶었다.
그래서 세비야에 도착하자마자 마트로 달려가서 적당한 가격대의 셰리와인 한 보틀 집어 숙소로 복귀했다.

사실 와알못에 공부도 많이 하고 간게 아니라서 일단 10~30유로 이내에 라벨에는 JEREZ, Oloroso만 적혀있음 되는거였다.

설레는 마음으로 그날 저녁 숙소에서 바로 따서 호로록 마셔봄.

와인도 컬러,노즈,팔렛,피니쉬같은 단계로 테이스팅을 하는지는 잘 모르겠으나, 위스키에 절여져있는 정신머리이기 때문에 그렇게 노트작성을 해봄.

컬러는 무슨 위스키인즐 알았다. 예전에 마셔본 포트와인은 루비같이 붉은기를 띄었는데 이 친구는 짙은 호박색의 잘익은 위스키 같은 색상이였다. 상당히 기대감을 주는 색상😊

야무지게 따라서 코에 스윽 가져다대면 노즈 초반에 우리나라에서 비닐팩에 담아서 파는 포도즙이나 사과즙 처음 딱 뜯었을때 느껴지는 과실향이 지배적이다. 그뒤로 옅은 견과류가 따라옴.

주정강화답게 도수가 18도로 소주급이므로 무리하지 않고 살짝 입에 담았다. 우선 놀란건, 포트와인은 그냥 디저트처럼 마셔야 될 정도로 달았다면, 이건 그에 비해 달달함은 크게 없다. 여러 음식들과 페어링해도 될만한 수준. 그리고 생각보다 바디감이 있고, 위스키의 그 느낌이 슬쩍 존재했다. 오크의 기운이 살찍 감돌고 약간의 스파이시도 묻어있음.

피니쉬는 위스키처럼 가져가진 못하고, 시큼시큼하며 끝에서 너티함이 좀더 부각되며 마무리.

우선 그려왔던 이미지랑은 전혀 다른 와인이였다.
크게 달지 않았고, 의외로 위스키 같은 느낌이있고, 여러 음식들과 잘 맞을것 같았고, 묵직했고, 그러나 막상 올로로소 캐스크에서 숙성된 위스키들과는 또 결이 틀린, 하지만 그 만의 개성이 맛있게 다가오는 와인이였음.

맥주 한잔으로 밤새 파티 가능한 알쓰들에게 위스키 같은 재미를 줄 수 있는 술이 아닌가 싶다. 다음에 또 사마실 의향이 있냐고 묻는 다면 예스.

좋은경험이였다.

그나저나, 시차적응 못해서 이따 두시간뒤에 출근하고 지방으로 출장도 가야되는데 여러모로 망했다.

One of the three things I really wanted to experience on this trip to Spain was sherry wine. Oloroso sherry, specifically.
Same as with whisky, the deeper I want to get to know a drink, the more I'm the type who has to buy it by the bottle, so with sherry too I wanted to buy a whole bottle and finish it all myself rather than drink it by the glass.
So the moment I arrived in Seville, I ran to a supermarket, grabbed a reasonably priced bottle of sherry, and headed back to my room.
(I even packed a travel wine glass so I could enjoy it properly at the accommodation for a few days.😁)

Honestly, I'm a wine noob and didn't do much homework before going, so my criteria were just: within 10-30 euros, and the label says JEREZ and Oloroso.

With a fluttering heart, I opened it that very evening at my accommodation and took a sip.

I'm not sure whether wine is tasted in stages like colour, nose, palate, finish, but my brain is pickled in whisky, so that's how I wrote my notes.

The colour, I thought it was some kind of whisky. The port wine I had before had a ruby-like red tint, but this one was a deep amber colour like a nicely matured whisky. A colour that really raises expectations😊

Pour a good glass and bring it up to your nose, and early on the nose is dominated by the fruity aroma you get when you first tear open those pouches of grape or apple juice they sell in Korea. Faint nuts follow behind.

Being a fortified wine, it's 18% ABV, soju territory, so I didn't overdo it and just took a small sip. The first surprise: if port wine was sweet enough that you have to drink it like a dessert, this one by comparison isn't very sweet at all. It's at a level you could pair with all kinds of food. It also has more body than I expected, and that whisky feeling was quietly there. A hint of oak lingers, and there's a bit of spice too.

The finish doesn't carry on the way a whisky does; it's tart and tangy, and at the end the nuttiness steps forward a bit more to wrap it up.

First of all, it was a completely different wine from what I'd pictured.
It wasn't very sweet, it had a surprisingly whisky-like feel, it seemed like it would go well with lots of foods, and it was weighty. But it was also a different breed from whiskies aged in Oloroso casks, a wine whose own personality came across as delicious.

I think it's a drink that could give lightweights, who can party all night on one glass of beer, the kind of fun whisky gives. If you asked me whether I'd buy it again, yes.

It was a great experience.

By the way, I haven't gotten over my jet lag, and in two hours I have to go to work and then head out on a business trip out of town, so I'm doomed in more ways than one.
