Balvenie Double Wood 12years

처음 위스키를 마셔보고 싶다고 생각했을때 쯤엔 지금처럼 술픽업 시스템이나 주변에 리쿼샵이 많지 않아서 여기저기 소

문듣고 찾아갔던 곳이 남대문주류상가였다.

처음 가 본 그곳은 잘 모르고 잘 못봤던 위스키들이 넘쳐났고, 가격도 일반 리쿼샵들보다 저렴한 편이였기 때문에 역시 소

문만큼 이곳은 술쟁이들의 천국이구나 싶었고, 위린이로써 눈이 휘둥그레 해져서 신나게 월급을 웃으며 탕진하던 기억이

난다.

(아물론 지금도 위린이 이기 때문에 한번씩 가면 눈이 돌면서 합리적 사고회로가 고장나기 시작하고, 웃으며 지갑을 열고,

묵직해지는 백팩에 기분이 좋아진다....저...정신체리...)

그렇게 한참 남대문을 들를 때마다, 그 당시 반드시 기본옵션마냥 업어오던 술이 있었는데 그게 바로,

맛있고 얄밉고

개인적으로 지금은 발베니 더블우드 12년 보단 글렌드로낙12년을 선호하는 성향이 되어있지만,

그 당시만 하더라도 나으 원탑 최애위스키는 발베니 더블우드 12년이였다.

고도수의 술을 니트로 마시는게 익숙치 않았던 시절이였음에도 불구하고,

40도나 되는 술을 이렇게나 부드럽고, 달콤하게 즐기면서 마실 수 있구나.

허허 위스키라는게 되게 맛있는거구나, 하게 만들어 준 고마운 제품.

심지어 그 당시에는 가격도 7~8만원대여서 지금보다 가격 부담도 없었으니, 최애가 아닐 수가 없었다.

지금은 시간이 흐르고 경험이 늘어나다보니 40도 따리 위스키는 심심하고 재미없고 어린친구들이 보여주는 표현의 한계

와 가벼움이 느껴지게 되어 발베니 더블우드 12년을 최애로 꼽지도 않고, 자주 찾지도 않는다.

라고 쓰고 곰곰히 생각해보니까 자주 찾지 않았을 뿐이지 돌이켜보면 집구석에서 떨어질만 하면 항상 채워져 있었던 제품

이기도 하다.

(음....없었던 적은 없네....)

생각해보니 지금 마시고 있는 병도 13만원인가 주고 사왔던 기억이 난다.(흑우흑우...ㅠ^ㅠ)

대형마트에서 가끔 8~9만원대 행사 가격, 한정수량으로 내놓고 사람들 오픈런 하는 모습을 보고 있자면,

저 자식 저거 그럴만한놈도 아닌데 무슨 오픈런이야~ 아주 건방져졌네 저자식이 저거?응?

싶으면서도, 또 마음 한편으론 '힝...나도 8만원에 사고싶다' 하고 생각이 든다.

(지금은 행사가격에 한정수량으로 팔지만, 3~4년전에만 하더라도 사려면 빡스띠기 할 수도 있었...)

아 무슨 그래도 발베니 더블우드 12년을 오픈전부터 줄서서 기다려 사냐 그건 현명한 소비가 아니야!

라고 말하면서 또 현실은 개흑우 마냥 13만원에 그냥 리쿼샵에서 눈탱이 쳐맞은 기분으로 샀다는 사실에 현타가 온다.

개얄밉!

왜 얄미운데 사먹는걸까. 왜 난 흑우가 되어있나.

......왜긴 왜야 먹을만하고 맛있으니까 그렇지.

자주 찾지는 않게 되었지만 그래도 가끔 한잔씩 생각나서 따라 마시게 되는 이유들이 분명 있다.

우선 잔에 담아 놓으면, 위스키 같은 고도수 술의 편견을 깨버릴 만큼 향긋한 과일향과 발베니 특유의 달큰한 벌꿀향이 코
를 자극한다. 향의 끝 부분에서는 바닐라의 느낌도 스며들어온다.

발베니 더블우드 12년은 우선 이 노즈 영역에서 열일을 해준다.

맛은 상대적으로 낮은 도수(나에게)에 어린 친구라 확실히 맛이 많이 비어있다는 생각이 들지만, 그래도 초보자들에게는

꽤 거부감 없이 달콤한 셰리와 고소한 견과류의 맛, 그리고 약간의 스파이시를 느끼게 해줄 것이다.

피니쉬는 약간 과실의 향긋함이 적당한 여운으로 목과 코에 남아있다.(저숙성년수 치고는 여운이 긴편)

아마 처음 마셔본다면 와, 맛있다?위스키?위스키라는거 맛있는거네? 라고 바로 생각이 들 수 있다고 봄.

(실제로 주변 지인들이 추천해달라고 하면 얄미우면서도 어쩔수없이 추천해주고는 한다. 물론 싸게 사셔야.....)

그리고 개인적으로 발베니 더블우드 12년도 에어레이션이 좀 되고 나면 셰리 캐릭터의 단 향과 맛이 좀더 열리는 느낌이

들기 때문에, 천천히 한병을 사서 즐기기에도 괜찮은 제품이라고 본다.

이제 겨우 12살 어린 놈이 건방지게 주제를 모르고 까부는 마트 오픈런, 다시 조금씩 나아지고 있지만 예전만 못한 접근성

등에 상당히 얄미워져버렸고, 한때의 나의 최애가 망가져버린 모습을 보는 기분도 들지만, 그래도 싱글몰트 위스키를 마시

고 얘기 할때, 반드시 한번은 얘기 해야될만한 위스키인 것은 사실이다.

그러긴 힘들겠지만, 다시 예전 처럼 가성비 원탑 위스키가 되었으면 좋겠다.

(주류세나 좀 개정해주던지.....)

Balvenie Double Wood 12years

Back when I first started wanting to try whisky, there weren't liquor pickup services like there are now, or many liquor shops around, so the place I ended up going to after hearing about it from here and there was the Namdaemun liquor market.

The first time I went, it was overflowing with whiskies I didn't know and had hardly ever seen, and prices were cheaper than regular liquor shops, so I thought, just like the rumours said, this place really is heaven for booze hounds. I remember being a wide-eyed whisky newbie, happily blowing my paycheck with a big grin.

(Of course, I'm still a whisky newbie now, so every time I go, my eyes start spinning, my rational-thinking circuit begins to short out, I open my wallet with a smile, and my ever-heavier backpack makes me happy.... g...get a grip...)

Back in those days, every time I dropped by Namdaemun, there was one bottle I always brought home like it was a default option, and that was,

the Balvenie DoubleWood 12 Years.

Delicious and annoying

Personally, these days I've become someone who prefers GlenDronach 12 over Balvenie DoubleWood 12,

but back then, my number one all-time favourite whisky was the Balvenie DoubleWood 12.

Even though it was a time when I wasn't used to drinking high-proof spirits neat,

it showed me you could enjoy a spirit that's a whole 40% this smoothly and this sweetly.

A product I'm grateful for, because it made me go, huh, so whisky is actually really tasty.

On top of that, back then it only cost around 70,000-80,000 won, so it wasn't a strain on the wallet like it is now. How could it not be my favourite?

Now that time has passed and I've gained more experience, 40%-ish whiskies feel bland and boring, and I can feel the limits of expression and the lightness that the young ones show, so I no longer name the Balvenie DoubleWood 12 as my favourite, nor do I reach for it often.

Is what I wrote, but thinking it over carefully, it's only that I don't reach for it often. Looking back, it's also a bottle that always got restocked at home just as it was about to run out.

(Hmm.... there's never actually been a time I didn't have one....)

Come to think of it, I remember paying something like 130,000 won for the bottle I'm drinking right now. (Sucker, total sucker... T^T)

When I see big supermarkets occasionally put it out at a promo price of 80,000-90,000 won in limited quantities, and people doing open-runs for it,

I think, that little punk isn't even worth that, what's with the open-run~ He's gotten way too big for his boots, that punk, huh?

and yet part of me also thinks, 'aww... I want to buy it for 80,000 won too.'

(Now they sell it in limited quantities at promo prices, but just 3-4 years ago you could even buy it by the case...)

Come on, lining up before the doors open to buy a Balvenie DoubleWood 12? That's not smart shopping!

I say that, but then the fact that in reality I bought it like a total sucker at a liquor shop for 130,000 won, feeling completely ripped off, hits me with a heavy dose of reality.

So damn annoying!

Why do I keep buying it even though it's annoying? Why have I become a sucker?

...... Why else? Because it's worth drinking and it's tasty, that's why.

I don't reach for it often anymore, but there are definitely reasons I still think of it now and then and pour myself a glass.

First, once it's in the glass, fragrant fruit and Balvenie's signature sweet honey tickle the nose, enough to shatter the prejudice against high-proof spirits like whisky. Toward the end of the nose, a hint of vanilla seeps in too.

The Balvenie DoubleWood 12 really puts in the work on the nose, above all.

On the palate, with its relatively low ABV (for me) and its young age, it definitely feels like a lot is missing, but for beginners it'll still deliver sweet sherry, nutty flavours and a little spice without much resistance.

The finish leaves a bit of fragrant fruitiness lingering in the throat and nose for a decent while. (Fairly long for such a young whisky.)

If it's your first time, I think you might immediately go, wow, this is tasty? Whisky? So whisky is actually tasty stuff?

(In fact, when friends ask me for a recommendation, even though it annoys me, I end up recommending it anyway. As long as you buy it cheap, of course.....)

And personally, I feel that once the Balvenie DoubleWood 12 gets some aeration, the sweet aromas and flavours of its sherry character open up more, so I think it's also a nice one to buy a bottle of and enjoy slowly.

The supermarket open-runs for a barely-12-year-old kid who's cheekily forgotten his place, plus the accessibility that's slowly improving again but still isn't what it used to be, have made it pretty annoying, and it feels a bit like watching my former favourite get ruined. But it's true that whenever you drink and talk about single malt whisky, it's a whisky you absolutely have to mention at least once.

It'll be tough, but I hope it becomes the number one value-for-money whisky again, like it used to be.

(Or maybe just revise the liquor tax already.....)
