Balvenie French Oak 16years

위스키를 잘 모르던(실은 지금도 잘모름 응애) 그 시절에 처음 발베니 12년 더블우드를 마셨을때 느꼈던 충격은 꽤 컸다.

40도의 고도수의 술이 이렇게나 부드럽고, 달콤함을 넘어서 다양한 맛이 느껴지고 거부감이 없을 수 있구나 하고.

발베니가 생산하는 대부분의 제품이 그런식으로 다가오는 것 같다.

이런맛이?이런향이?이렇게도?이럴수가?

물론 요새의 시세나 구매난이도를 더하면 이유 모르게 얄미운 증류소이긴 하지만,(아몰랑 그냥 얄미워!)

대부분의 제품은 마셔보면 결국 발베니가 왜 오픈런을 하게 만드는 위스키인지,

왜 구하기가 어려운 제품이 많은지, 가격이 왜 자꾸 비싸지는에 대한 답을 알려준다.

(개취지만 심지어 케이스,병, 라벨의 디자인도 극호~느므므찜)

때로는 가성비가 떨어진다 느낄때도 있지만,

또 딱히 이만큼 다수에게 만족감을 줄 수 있는 위스키를 잘~ 만들 수 있는 증류소가 몇군데나 될지 모르겠다.

그만큼 개인적으로 발베니는 얄미우면서도 인정하게 되는 증류소이다.

전에도 언급했었지만, 어떤 증류소에서든 잘 만들어진(잘 만들어진게 중요)엔트리 급 위스키의 역할은,

그 증류소의 다음을 궁금하게 만드는 것이라고 생각한다.

그런 의미에서 발베니 더블우드 12년은 상당히 잘 만들어진 위스키이고, 소비자들에게 발베니의 그 다음 혹은 다른 제품

을 궁금하게 만드는 것 같다.

나 역시 한때 발베니 더블우드 12년을 맛있게 잘 먹어왔던 위친자로써, 또 다른 발베니를 경험해보고 싶었었고 여러 종류

의 발베니를 찾아마시며 경험했었다.

그러다 또 궁금해져서 찾아봤던 위스키가 바로,

발베니 16년 프렌치오크.

푸르스름한 레터링들이 묘하게 다가온다.

싱글몰트 위스키를 접하게 되면, 초반엔 버번,셰리, 포트,마데이라 이런 이름으로 불려지는 캐스크 숙성제품을 접하는게

대부분인데,

응????프렌치??피노 뭐라???뭔데그거 나와인잘모르는데뭔데그거! 프랑스와인? 그거맛있는거아니야? 막 맛있는통에

맛있는거 넣어서 맛있게 만들고 뭐 막 그런거아니야? 데이빗스튜어트어르신이 막 마법부려넣고?

발베니를 인정하지만, 괴랄하게 형성되어져있는 가격에 살짝 시큰둥해졌었다.

꽃,사과,꿀

.........

막상 손에 넣고 나니 눈탱이를 맞은거 같기도 했고,

경험도 안해봤는데 바로 뚜따를 하기엔 너무 아까운 느낌이 들기도 했고,

요즘 이 지옥같은 인플레이션의 시대를 슬기롭게 이겨내야 했기 때문에,

내 술을 아끼고 남의 술을 까먹고자 집근처 Bar 로 달려가서 잔 술로 마셔보게된다.

아니 근데 왠걸 바에서도 16년 프렌치오크를 찾는 사람이 없어서 였는지 주문하자 새 보틀을 뚜따해주셔서, 미안하고 고

맙습니다.

경험을 얘기해보자면,

뚜따 직후였지만 알콜부즈는 거의 느껴지지 않았다.

직관적으로 느껴지는건 청사과 스러운 과실향.

청사과에 발베니표 꿀을 살짝 찍어서 냄새 맡으면 이런 느낌일것 같다.

맛도 향에서 느껴진 바와 같이 당도높은 청사과 내지 청사과에 꿀 찍어 먹는 느낌.

끝에서는 달달하고 부드럽게 이어지는 그 느낌에 살짝 스파이시가 더해진다.

피니쉬는 오크향이 살짝나고 마무리도 사과스럽게 마무리됨.

이런 향긋한 느낌의 피니쉬가 길게 여운을 남기는건 처음 느껴본다.

도수도 발베니 치고는 후한(47.6%)편이라, 무게감이 좀 더 더해진것 같다.

전체적으로는 색다른 맛과 경험을 하게 해주는 맛있는 위스키.

이 혼란스러운 시대에 싸게 구할 수 있다면, 정말 맛있을 위스키.

근데 이제 나처럼 호구당하면 맛이 반감됨.

Balvenie French Oak 16years

Back when I didn't know much about whisky (truth is I still don't, waah, baby noises), the shock I felt the first time I drank the Balvenie 12 DoubleWood was pretty huge.

That a 40% high-proof spirit could be this smooth, go beyond sweet to show a whole range of flavours, and not be off-putting at all.

Most of what Balvenie makes seems to hit me that way.

This taste? This aroma? Like this? No way?

Of course, factor in today's prices and how hard they are to buy, and it's a distillery that's annoying for reasons I can't quite put my finger on (whatever, it's just annoying!),

but when you actually drink most of their products, they end up giving you the answer to why Balvenie is a whisky people open-run for,

why so many of its products are hard to get, and why the prices keep going up.

(Personal taste, but even the box, bottle and label designs are a huge yes~ sooo smitten)

Sometimes I feel the value for money isn't there,

but then again, I'm not sure how many distilleries can make whisky this well~ that satisfies this many people.

That's how much Balvenie, for me personally, is a distillery that's annoying but that I end up acknowledging.

(I acknowledge it, Master David Stewart! You know it's always whisky over health, rig- no, never mind!!)

As I've mentioned before, I think the role of a well-made (well-made is the key) entry-level whisky from any distillery

is to make you curious about what that distillery has next.

In that sense, the Balvenie DoubleWood 12 is a really well-made whisky, and it seems to make drinkers curious about Balvenie's next step or its other releases.

As a whisky addict who once happily enjoyed the Balvenie DoubleWood 12 myself, I wanted to experience other Balvenies too, and I sought out and drank all sorts of them.

Then the whisky I got curious about and went looking for was,

the Balvenie 16 Year French Oak.

The bluish lettering strikes me in a curious way.

When you get into single malt whisky, early on you mostly come across cask-matured releases with names like bourbon, sherry, port, Madeira and so on,

Huh???? French?? Pino-what??? What's that, I don't really know wine, what is it! French wine? Isn't that the tasty stuff? Like, you put tasty stuff in a tasty cask to make it tasty, something like that? With Master David Stewart casting some magic into it?

Let's see, hang on, let's have a look... let's see here...

Whaaat???? What's with the box, what's that subtle blue sheen!? It looks classy!? Is it bluish because it's French? What? Looks fancy? Does it taste fancy too? Probably, right? It's Balvenie? It's 16 years old!?

So! How much? What? How much??? HOW much???

............Yeah.......... I can't buy that.....

I acknowledge Balvenie, but the bizarrely set price made me go a bit meh.

(Master Stewart... is this right?)

So I kept skipping it, skipping and skipping, then picking and picking, pick 'n' pick 'n' pick, come on pick one, grab it!

Check... out?

You're mine now.

(But after I bought it, it turns out William Grant & Sons Korea decided to officially import the Balvenie 16 French Oak starting this year. Hehe, that's infuriating... I don't really know what the official import price is... I did see Wine&More selling it in limited quantities for 350,000 won... and I... paid more than that... Master Stewart..... Balvenie..... you S.O.B.s..... so mean.....)

Once I actually had it in my hands, it felt like I'd been ripped off,

and it also felt like too much of a waste to crack it open right away without ever having tried it,

and I had to wisely get through this hellish era of inflation,

so to save my own booze and drink someone else's, I dashed to a bar near my place and tried it by the glass.

(So wise 👍)

But wouldn't you know it, maybe because nobody at the bar ever asked for the 16 French Oak, when I ordered it they opened a brand-new bottle for me. Sorry, and thank you.

Let me tell you about the experience,

Even though it had just been opened, I could barely feel any alcohol booze.

What hits you straight away is a green-apple-like fruitiness.

I imagine it'd smell like this if you dipped a green apple lightly in Balvenie-brand honey and sniffed it.

The taste, just like the nose, is like a high-sugar green apple, or a green apple dipped in honey.

At the end, that sweet, smooth feel carries on, with a slight touch of spice added.

The finish has a bit of oak, and it wraps up in an apple-y way too.

This is the first time I've felt a fragrant finish like this linger so long.

The ABV is also generous for a Balvenie (47.6%), so it seems to have picked up a bit more weight.

Overall, a delicious whisky that gives you a different taste and a different experience.

In these chaotic times, if you can get it cheap, a truly delicious whisky.

But if you get ripped off like me, the taste is cut in half.

Anyway, Balvenie still has my respect.

I'll come see you again with another bottle, Master Stewart.
Please retire as late as you possibly can.
